How to Find the Right Chain Length
The right chain length determines how a necklace looks: close to the neck, on the collarbone or as an eye-catcher on the décolleté. Neck shape, neckline and occasion all play a role.
In this guide, we show the common lengths, how to determine your ideal length, and which length suits which neckline and pendant.
The common chain lengths at a glance
- 40 cm: Sits at the base of the neck – elegant with open necklines and evening dresses.
- 45 cm: Falls to the collarbone – the versatile standard length for every day.
- 50–55 cm: Reaches below the collarbone – ideal for pendants and for layering several chains.
- 60–70 cm: Falls onto the décolleté – an expressive look, also over sweaters and blouses.
These figures are guidelines: exactly where a chain falls depends on neck size and build.
How to determine your ideal length
Place a string or tape measure around your neck and let it fall to where you want the chain to sit. The measured length in centimeters is the right chain length. Alternatively, simply measure a chain you already like.
Which length suits which neckline?
- V-neck: A chain with a pendant that follows the V shape, around 45 to 50 cm.
- Crew neck: Short chains above the neckline or long chains over it.
- Turtleneck: Long chains from around 60 cm create a beautiful accent.
- Off-the-shoulder: Short chains of around 40 to 45 cm emphasize the neck and collarbone.
The right length for pendants
Small pendants look especially good on 45 cm, while larger pendants work well on 50 to 60 cm. If you layer several chains, choose lengths about 5 cm apart so they do not overlap.
